Infinite Recursion 2024
Folkwang University Of The Arts

Experience the mesmerizing journey of "Infinite Recursion," a captivating performance by Irene Nocella , directed by Reza Pourjafarian, with visuals crafted and editing by Hamidreza Ghasemi. Recorded at the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts, this piece draws profound inspiration from Valentin Stip's evocative composition, "Nwia." We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Valentin Stip for his inspiring music, which served as the cornerstone of this artistic endeavor.

Desktop Spiral will be an outdoor video installation that explores the relationship between digital perception and self-representation.

By standing before the screen, the viewer’s identity becomes fragmented, multiplying into a complex interplay of presence and absence. This dynamic mirrors the experience of navigating digital spaces, where our online personas are fractured, duplicated, and projected indefinitely.

Exposé – Infinite Recursion

Theme & Research Field

My work is situated within the fields of interactive video installation, photography, and expanded animation. At its core is the exploration of recursion and temporality as spatial and visual experiences.

Infinite Recursion combines a video installation with a photographic series within a shared environment. The video work is based on a camera feedback system in which the image continuously reproduces itself, generating an infinite visual loop. This principle can be described through the concept of mise en abyme — a structure in which an image reflects itself within its own representation.

The installation is passively interactive: the movements of visitors influence both the visual projection and an atmospheric soundscape. This creates a dynamic system in which image, space, and body become interconnected.

Alongside the video installation, I am developing a photographic installation composed of photo collages. These works are created by layering multiple photographs of the same subject taken at different moments in time. In this way, time becomes condensed within the image, producing visual overlaps that represent a static form of recursion.

The exhibition space will also include materials from the development process. The spatial arrangement of the video installation, photographic collages, and process materials creates a coherent structure in which both media are formally and conceptually connected.

Aim of the Project

The aim of this project is to create a virtual and interactive environment in which the concept of time becomes visible and experientially accessible through the combination of different media.

Through the interplay of video, sound, and photography, the work constructs an atmosphere where time is not merely represented, but perceived as a spatial and visual experience.

The project understands recursion as a state in which image, body, and space collapse into one another. Within this system, time no longer appears as a linear progression, but as a condensation of moments that overlap and permeate each other — like layers of an image observing itself.

Research Question

How can time be visually represented and spatially experienced?
